This essay was first published in the Cosmopolis Literary Supplement.  The CLS  is one of the the house ezines of the Vance Integral Edition, and Till Noever, the editor, asked me for an article on how my work had been influenced by Jack Vance.  At the time of writing, Dragonchaser had not been written, and the article draws solely on the experience of The Zael Inheritance.
